Nagashi Mangan ("flowing mangan") is one of the most unique rules: you can score the equivalent of a Mangan despite NEVER winning normally, but only if the hand ends in a draw (ryuukyoku).

Nagashi Mangan Requirements

To get Nagashi Mangan, EVERY tile you discarded throughout that hand must be a terminal (1/9) or honor tile, AND none of your discards may have been claimed by anyone via Pon/Chi/Kan.

Why It's Rare

The requirement is fairly strict -- you need to deliberately discard only edge tiles the entire hand (usually sacrificing your own hand's chances), and hope nobody's interested in claiming your discards.

If you succeed, you get paid as either dealer or non-dealer based on your seat (Mangan-equivalent), AND you're automatically treated as tenpai for tenpai/noten payment purposes.
