Illustration for Ura Dora vs Dora: What's the Difference?

Regular dora (omote dora) comes from the indicator tile revealed at the start of the hand, and applies to EVERY player -- whoever has that dora tile in hand gets the bonus han, regardless of how they win.

Ura Dora: A Hidden Bonus for Riichi

Ura Dora comes from an ADDITIONAL indicator tile kept hidden throughout the hand, and is only revealed and counted if you WIN while in riichi. If you never riichi, ura dora is never relevant to you at all.

Why This Makes Riichi More Exciting

Ura Dora is one reason riichi feels like a favorable gamble -- you have no idea whether your hand happens to match the ura dora until you actually win. Sometimes a small hand (1-2 han) suddenly becomes a Mangan purely because of ura dora.

Neither dora nor ura dora count as a yaku -- both only add han, so you still need at least one genuine yaku to be able to win at all.
