The World Series of Mahjong (WSOM) Tournament Format

The World Series of Mahjong (WSOM) is one of the most prestigious international mahjong competitions, using Chinese Official (Guobiao) rules as its official standard.

General Tournament Format

Major tournaments like WSOM typically use a multi-session staged format, where each competitor plays several sessions against different opponents, with scores accumulated across sessions to determine who advances to the final round.

Why Chinese Official Was Chosen

Chinese Official was chosen as the international standard for being more "culturally neutral" compared to Riichi (which is steeped in Japanese terms and concepts) -- suited for a competition inviting participants from different regional ruleset backgrounds.

Opportunities for Indonesian Players

Indonesia's competitive mahjong community has started growing, and a few players have already taken part in international events like this. If you're interested in the competitive path, seriously learning Chinese Official is a good first step.
